It has been an action-packed start to the new year! We have kicked off our new non-fiction (information) text unit by taking a close look at details in a variety of texts that I brought in from my house, including a guitar chord chart, a hiking map of the White Mountains, Lego building directions, and even the building plans to the second floor of my house. Then, we practiced looking for information and interesting details in our own independent reading books.
We have also been looking closely at details during our math class. Each week, we have been examining a different coin. So far, we have been writing and drawing to show what we noticed on the penny and nickel. It is amazing how many small details and writing can be found on these coins. We learned a money game called Collect 25 Cents that helps students learn the names and values of coins, as well as how to trade coins and count groups of coins. As we become comfortable with the game, we can increase the difficulty of the game to play up to 50 cents, one dollar, or more. I will send home directions so you can try this game at home. It would also be great for students to practice counting groups of coins at home and to find examples of different state quarters.
During our Technology Integration times, we have been working on finishing our paper circuit projects, the final project in our electricity/circuits unit. I will share more photos and information about this unit in an upcoming post.
