Lego Robotics: Dancing Birds!

Over the last few weeks, we have been taking our understanding of robots and programming to the next level.  Students worked in pairs to build their Dancing Bird robot, which includes two birds, two pulleys, a belt, and a motion sensor.  First, students had some time to explore creating programs that used the motion sensor.

Then, each student made predictions about what would happen to the speed and direction of each bird when they changed the belt configuration and/or the size of the pulleys.  They recorded their predictions and then worked with their partner to test out each configuration and record their results.  Next, students worked with their partners to solve up to three challenges that were based on what they had already learned about creating programs with motion sensors and modifying their robot model.  We have been working on developing flexibility to solve problems when something doesn't work the first time.  Students are learning to use what they already know to help them fix up their models and programs.

It was exciting to see students collaborating and sharing their ideas through discussion, writing, and labeled diagrams!  Students should be proud of their hard work during our Technology Integration times!

Special Holiday Projects with our Buddies!

Before the holiday break, we worked on special projects with our wonderful 5th and 6th grade buddies from Mrs. Shedd's class.  Our buddies helped us create acrostic and haiku poems, as well as beautiful watercolor paintings.  They also helped us make frames and special wrapping paper for our projects.
