Classroom News (from last Thursday's newsletter)

From the newsletter that went home last Thursday....

It sounds like everyone had a great time on all of the different hikes last week.  A big thank you to all of the chaperones who joined us for this special event! What a beautiful day for a hike!

Over the past two weeks, our math class has been working on building, writing, and comparing 2-digit and 3-digit numbers.  Students have been working with partners to learn about place value and build numbers using base-10 blocks and Cuisenaire rods.  Students also played games to practice writing numbers in both expanded form (ex: 800+40+6) and standard form (ex: 846). Another big focus during math workshop has been counting by 1s and 10s starting at different numbers and recording our thinking in our math journals.

During writing workshop, we continued working on our “small moments” narrative pieces.  We are learning how “stretch out” our writing by including interesting details in our writing, such as what we saw, heard, smelled, felt, or tasted.  Last week, I brought in pink asters from my garden to help us practice using our senses to make observations. Students did an amazing job writing and drawing to show what they noticed.  This week, students have been adding details in their own stories.

We are also continuing to build our stamina to read independently and read with others for longer periods of time.  One partner reading lesson focused on reading a Scholastic News article about what it means to be a good citizen. After reading, students discussed the article with a partner and then wrote and drew a picture to show ways that they are responsible in our classroom and at school.  We also played a fun Scholastic word web game.

Hope everyone had a great weekend! It was wonderful to see so many of you at the Harvest Festival!
