Special Guest and Quilt Squares!

In honor of Mother's Day, I would like to share info about a special guest who visited our classroom earlier this year... my mom!  Since the second grade math classes have been learning about geometry and measurement, I asked my mother to visit and show us her quilt projects.  It was fun to look for different shapes, such as triangles, rectangles, trapezoids, and circles and to try to guess the names of the various quilt patterns.  We also had a chance to use skip counting to figure out how many triangles and other shapes were in some of the different designs.

Afterwards, students took a turn creating their own quilt squares using paper squares, pattern blocks, pattern block templates, and lots of coloring supplies.  Each student's square is an important part of  our class quilt which is displayed on the bulletin board in our classroom.

A big thanks to my mom for visiting and sharing her love of art and math!
